Join Center naturalists on a search for aquatic insects, which are good indicators of water quality. Participants will search the Vlomankill for common macroinvertebrates, catch and identify them, then release them back into the stream. This program is open to the public free of charge. Participants are urged to dress for outdoor activity. Parents and children must accompany each other. Wear water-friendly footgear; no flip-flops or bare feet, please. Center naturalists will lead an outdoor field study of Five Rivers? ponds and the interconnections of the life within. A freshwater pond is habitat for an exciting diversity of plants and animals. Basking turtles and waterfowl are sometimes seen on the ponds, and dragonflies hunt along the banks. This program is open to the public free of charge. DRAGONFLY PROGRAM AT FIVE RIVERS CENTER A program on dragonflies will be conducted on Saturday, June 27, 2 PM, at Five Rivers Center 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar. Insect watching may not be up there with bird watching, but it is catching on; especially if the insects are large and predictable. Dragonflies and damselflies fit this description. On this walk, led by Center naturalists, participants will use binoculars to observe the habits of these ancient insects. Dragonflies and Damselflies have set patterns of action, territories and courting rituals, and many are quite colorful. We will try to identify the dragonflies and damselflies that we catch, observe, and then release unharmed back to nature. This program is open to the public free of charge.
