Nut trees are important food sources both for wildlife and people. But since most nut trees are wind-pollinated, the ?hard mast? crop can vary widely from year to year. With the Hudson Quadricentennial in mind, the theme of this year?s Festival is ?The Year of the River.? The Festival takes place throughout the 450-acre property, located at 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar. Parking and admission is free. Parking for people with disabilities is available. Aimed at children and families, the Festival?s activities are strong on ?kid appeal.? A special ?passport? guides children from one activity to the next, including hands-on eco-crafts, and meet-and-greet with live animals (under the guidance of experienced animal rehabilitators). Smokey Bear will be on hand to encourage fire safety. Kids will have fun pretending to be water droplets as they play an active game that mimics the water cycle. For those seeking adventure, nets will be available to go on a catch-and-release ?Insect Safari.? All totaled, there will be 25 education stations involving 17 conservation education partner organizations. In recognition of the Hudson River ?Quad,? visitors of all ages will be invited to contribute to a mural depicting Five Rivers 400 years ago, today, and 400 years in the future. The Center?s environmental focus will be evident in special features such as naturalist-led trail hikes and a ?green technology? exhibit demonstrating the many sustainable elements at Five Rivers. In addition to activities which appeal to a range of ages, there will be snacks for sale, and a book and plant sale.
