For more information, please call 518-475-0291. PROGRAM ABOUT VINES A naturalists study of vining plants will be conducted on Sunday, August 15 at 2:00 PM. At this outdoor interpretive program, Center naturalists will lead participants in a search along Center trails for common climbers such as wild grape, Virginia creeper and poison ivy. Savvy identification tips will be provided. Environmentally-friendly ways to deal with poison ivy will also be discussed. SEARCH FOR THE GREAT EGRET AT FIVE RIVERS An interpretive program on the natural and cultural history of the great egret will be conducted on Tuesday, August 17 at 7:00 PM. In mid-August, post-breeding dispersal often graces wetlands in the Capital Region with the elegant great egret, the bird that inspired the conservation movement more than 100 years ago. At this outdoor foray, Center naturalists will lead participants around Center ponds and marshes in a search for egrets, herons and other wetland residents of the season. INTERPRETIVE WALK: THE OLD FIELD TRAIL An interpretive study of the Old Field Trail will be conducted on Thursday, August 19, 10:00 AM. On this outdoor tour, Center naturalists will discuss the steady transition of this former farmland into wild brushland teeming with bluebirds, rabbits, goldfinches and other fauna. The tour will cover approximately one-half mile over grass surfaces, with a few moderate ups and downs. NATURE JOURNALING AND YOGA A program on connecting with nature through journaling and yoga will be conducted on Saturday, August 21 at 10:00 AM. At this indoor/outdoor program, Center naturalists and certified yoga instructor Laura Garrison will lead participants in relating to the natural world through introductory journal writing, drawing en plein air and simple yoga activities. MUSKRATS A field study of muskrats and their kin will be conducted on Saturday, August 21 at 2:00 PM. At this outdoor program, Center naturalists will lead participants along gentle Center trails, searching wetlands and uplands for signs of seasonal activity of muskrats, beaver, meadow voles and other members of the rodent family. WILDFLOWERS A field study of the natural history of goldenrod will be conducted on Sunday, August 22 at 2:00 PM. During this outdoor investigation of the summer meadow, Center naturalists will discuss the natural history and folklore of goldenrod, a large and fascinating family of wildflowers often mistakenly blamed for seasonal hay fever. Field identification tips and the use of field guides and hand lenses to identify goldenrod species and other seasonal flora will also be covered. The impact of alien and invasive species on native flora will also be discussed. INSECT SEARCH An outdoor study of common insects will be conducted on Tuesday, August 24 at 7:00 PM. On this family-oriented program, Center staff will lead a search along Center trails for crickets, katydids, praying mantis and other late summer specialties. Families are encouraged to actively participate by sweep-netting for all things six-legged along the way. Staff will help participants identify the insects and discuss their fascinating natural history, ecology and economic importance before returning them to the wild unharmed. The impact of pesticides on keystone species such as honey bees will be discussed. BIRDS A field study of birds of late summer will be conducted on Saturday, August 28 at 9:00 AM. The program, in commemoration of the birth date of Jamestown, New York's Roger Tory Peterson, will focus on Peterson's revolutionary field mark identification system, which launched our national preoccupation with birds and bird conservation. Special attention will be paid to birds of conservation concern such as bluebirds and kestrels, which Peterson referred to as environmental litmus paper. WILD FRUITS A field study of berry-producing shrubs will be conducted on Saturday, August 28 at 2:00 PM. Late summer is a great time to assess the wild fruit crop. Soft mast is an important food source for wildlife at this time of year, and the competition is keen. On this outdoor survey of nature's bounty, Center naturalists will lead participants along gentle trails searching the dogwood and viburnum brush for wild fruits. The dos and don'ts of landscaping for wildlife and the impact of invasive species on native plant species will be discussed. On this family-oriented program, Center staff will lead a search along Center trails for grasshoppers, crickets, praying mantis and associated predator and prey species up and down the food chain. Staff will help participants identify the insects and discuss their ecological niche. The impact of invasive pest species such as emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle and viburnum leaf beetle will be discussed. SQUIRRELS A program on the natural history of squirrels will be conducted on Saturday, September 4 at 10:00 AM. At this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will present a brief overview of the squirrel family, including the six species that reside in New York State. Thereafter, Center staff will lead an interpretive search along the Centers gentle trails to look for and learn about squirrels. Simple but effective wildlife enhancement ideas for the backyard will be discussed. TEACHER WORKSHOP: Growing Up WILD A teacher workshop for early childhood educators on the award-winning curriculum-enhancement program Growing Up WILD will be conducted on Saturday, September 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. At this interactive workshop, Center staff will lead a participatory training in the Growing Up WILD initiative, which integrates wildlife themes into the core reading, writing and arithmetic disciplines. Participants will receive a free Growing Up WILD curriculum guide full of stimulating wildlife-oriented activities for students in pre-K and lower elementary grades. The workshop is open to teachers and youth leaders free of charge. In-service credit for this workshop may be arranged through the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center. The long term data collected on these citizen science outings help to monitor avian trends such as response to changing land use, climate change and other environmental influences. PROGRAM ON CONIFERS A field study of the natural history of evergreen trees will be conducted on Saturday, September 11 at 2:00 PM. This outdoor foray over gentle terrain will visit a variety of conifer stands. Participants will learn about the ecological and economic importance of common evergreens such as pine, spruce and cedar. Participants will learn basic tree identification tips. The impact of invasive forest pest species will be discussed. WOODSY OWL BIRTHDAY PROGRAM A family-oriented exploration of forest ecology will be conducted on Saturday, September 18 at 10:00 AM. On this outdoor study, Center naturalists will lead a search for seasonal signs of squirrels, deer, woodpeckers and owls. The program, which commemorates the 40th birthday of Woodsy Owl, will show how participants can "Lend A Hand, Care For The Land" right at home. MONARCH PROGRAM A field study of the Monarch butterfly will be conducted on Saturday, September 18 at 2:00 PM. In one of natures most extraordinary migrations, Monarch butterflies flit their way each fall from the northeastern US and Canada to a small forest in Mexico. On this outdoor foray, Center naturalists will lead participants along gentle Center trails, searching for Monarch larvae among milkweed stands and watching for adults in flight. Participants will learn about the Centers long-term Monarch Larvae Monitoring Program and also get tips on raising butterflies from caterpillars. SAVE THE DATE!
