ENDANGERED SPECIES An indoor/outdoor study of endangered wildlife species will be conducted on Saturday, December 4 at 10:00 AM. At this program, Center naturalists will conduct an indoor presentation about the main reasons some wildlife species are endangered or threatened, some of the challenges which wildlife species are facing in our area, and what you can do to help. Afterwards, Center naturalists will lead a tour along Center trails to discuss the ways in which Five Rivers is working to help conserve wildlife. CROWS AND THEIR KIN An indoor/outdoor study of the natural history of crows and their kin will be conducted on Saturday, December 4 at 2:00 PM. At this program, Center naturalists will conduct an indoor introduction to crows, blue jays and other birds in the corvid family, generally acknowledged as among the smartest of birds. Thereafter, Center naturalists will lead an outdoor search along Center trails for corvids and other birds which can be found on Center property. Please bring binoculars and bird books if you have them. SEARCH FOR OWLS A Hudson Mohawk Bird Club outing in search of owls will be conducted on Saturday, December 11 at 3:30 PM. At this informal outdoor survey, bird experts from the Bird Club and Audubon Society of the Capital Region will lead field parties to likely owl roosts along Five Rivers trails, then gather at a roaring campfire to compare findings. Complimentary hot dogs and hot drinks will answer the question who cooks for you? Registration is limited. Please call the Center at 518-475-0291 to register by Wednesday, December 8. FIELD STUDY OF CHRISTMAS TREES A field study of the natural history of evergreen trees will be conducted on Saturday, December 18 at 10:00 AM. Cone-bearing trees provide many creatures with food, nest sites, shelter from the weather and protection from predators. This outdoor foray over gentle terrain will consider the ecological, cultural and economic importance of common conifer species such as pine, spruce, fir and cedar. Participants will learn basic tree identification tips. The impacts of invasive forest pest species and climate change will be discussed. WILDLIFE PREPARATIONS FOR WINTER A field study of wildlife preparations for winter will be conducted on Saturday, December 18 at 2:00 PM. During this outdoor excursion, Center naturalists will lead a search over the meadow and through the woods, looking for tracks, dens, chewed cones and other seasonal signs of wildlife activity. The three common winter survival strategies will be discussed. The impact of climate change on various wildlife species will be discussed. Two programs on birds will be offered as 2010 closes and we welcome 2011. Both programs are open to the public, free of charge. Please note the registration deadline for the program on December 30. BIRDING FOR KIDS An elementary introduction to birds and bird life will be conducted on Thursday, December 30 at 10:00 AM. At this indoor/outdoor primer, Center naturalists will discuss concepts in bird anatomy, behavior, identification and conservation which parent and child can build upon in their own yard or park. Participants will study birds at the Center's feeders from indoors, then venture out along Center trails for a little field work. Simple but effective backyard bird conservation strategies will be discussed. This program is free of charge, but enrollment is limited. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. NEW YEARS DAY BIRD COUNT The 31st Annual New Years Day Bird Count at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center will be conducted on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at 9:00 AM. On this outdoor program, bird experts from Five Rivers, Capital Region Audubon and the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club will lead field parties along Center trails in search of resident species as well as late migrants. Billed as Albany's "First Morning," this annual field foray has recorded 70 different bird species in its span of three decades. The large volume of data collected over this timeframe has contributed to scientific research, and indicate widespread ornithological trends related to climate change, habitat modification, disease and other environmental influences. The program, one of the Center's many on-going citizen science projects, is geared for the birding novice and is free of charge. Participants are urged to bring binoculars and dress for outdoor activity. In the event of severe weather, this program may be canceled. Please call the Center at 518-475-0291 for more information.
