During this outdoor study along gentle trails, Center naturalists will discuss the natural history of fall wildflowers, including the many fascinating ways plants are adapted to spread their seeds. Field identification tips and the use of field guides to identify the common and not-so-common wildflowers of the season, whether in bloom or past, will also be covered. The impact of alien and invasive species on native plants will also be discussed. This program is open to the public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, this program may be cancelled. TEACHER WORKSHOP - Project WILD A teacher workshop on the award-winning curriculum-enhancement program Project WILD will be conducted on Saturday, November 6 at the NYSDEC Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. From 1:00 to 4:00 PM, Center staff will lead a participatory training in Wildlife In Learning Design, an education initiative which uses wildlife themes to integrate environmental concepts into the core reading, writing and arithmetic disciplines. Participants will receive a free Project WILD curriculum guide full of stimulating activities for students in grades K-12. The workshop is open to teachers and youth leaders free of charge. At this show-and-tell primer, Center staff will demonstrate how you can set up an odorless composting bin in your basement or backyard, providing your garden with rich organic nutrients. Savvy tips on how to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle at home will be discussed, such as what materials can and cant be recycled, and which safe bet products typically have recycled/recyclable content (such as egg cartons). Participants will learn how observing simple Reduce, Re-use and Recycle ideals can help to preserve natural resources, protect the environment and benefit the economy. Participants will also get to meet and learn about composting worms, and make a Recycle pin to wear home. This program is open to the public free of charge. America Recycles Day, held every year on November 15, is a national campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling and buying products made with recycled materials. Buying recycled is the step that closes the recycling loop. FAMILY PROGRAM ON ALTERNATIVE ENERGY An interactive family-oriented program on alternative energy will be conducted at the NYSDEC Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar on Saturday, November 13 at 2:00 PM. At this indoor workshop, participants will learn all about wind power and solar energy through a series of hands-on projects and experiments, including constructing a working model wind turbine. This program is open to the public and is ideal for children from 7 through 10 years old. Parent and child must accompany each other. There will be a $3 materials fee per child. Afterward, weather permitting, Center staff will lead a walk along gentle trails, looking for common creatures of the night such as the great horned owl, eastern coyote and opossum. WILDLIFE PREPARATIONS FOR WINTER A field study of wildlife preparations for winter will be conducted on Saturday, November 20 at 10:00 AM. During this outdoor excursion, Center naturalists will lead a search over the meadow and through the woods, looking for tracks, dens, chewed cones and other seasonal signs of wildlife activity. The three common winter survival strategies will be discussed. The impact of climate change on various wildlife species will be discussed. Participants are urged to dress for outdoor activity. In the event of severe weather, this program may be cancelled. PROGRAM ON FALL FOLKLORE AT FIVE RIVERS An outdoor study of folklore about fall will be conducted on Saturday, November 20 at 2:00 PM. On this "tour de farce," Center naturalists will lead a search along gentle Center trails to monitor the size of woolly bear caterpillar bands, beaver lodges, squirrel tails, nut crops and other natural phenomena said to predict the severity of the coming winter. Deer are very active at this season, fattening up for the winter and seeking prospective mates.
