Co-sponsored by The Friends of Five Rivers, this family-oriented environmental celebration will feature a variety of hands-on educational activities, interactive exhibits, interpretive walks and more. Wildlife experts Michelle Segerberg and Dee Strnisa will provide first-hand opportunities to meet live hawks, owls, snakes, turtles and insects up close and personal. Visitors can also cast for backyard bass, sweep-net for insects, do a nature craft, do science experiments, learn about guide dogs, catch a puppet show, and enjoy live music from two fabulous local bands, Nisky Dixie Cats and Acoustic Hartland...all absolutely free of charge. The collaborative extravaganza will also feature staffed exhibits and demonstrations from a wide range of local conservation partners such as the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Friends of the Rail Trail (FORT), Honest Weight Food Co-op, Hudson Mohawk Bird Club and USGS. The festival marks the official kick-off to the Centers ambitious programming year, which reaches more than 115,000 people annually. PREDATORS OF THE NIGHT A program on nocturnal predators will be conducted on Friday, October 1 at 7:00 PM. During this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will introduce participants to predator-prey relationships and discuss how camouflage, speed, reproduction rates and other adaptations contribute to the survival of wildlife species. Center staff will lead an outdoor foray along gentle trails, looking for night shift species such as the great horned owl, eastern coyote and fisher. NATURE WRITING A program on connecting with nature through writing will be conducted on Saturday, October 2 at 10:00 AM. During this outdoor workshop, Center naturalists will lead participants in a variety of creative writing exercises, relating to the natural world en plein air. FALL FOLIAGE A naturalist's study of natures autumnal palette will be conducted on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00 PM. During this walk through the woods, Center naturalists will lead a tour of falls vibrant foliage along gentle Center trails. In addition to identifying tree species by color, we will discuss the science behind autumns bewitching biochemistry. The impact of climate change on local tree species will also be discussed. Come join us for some great programs at Five Rivers, described below. GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM AT FIVE RIVERS A program for girl scouts on wetlands and water conservation will be conducted on Saturday, October 9 at 2:00 PM. This indoor/outdoor study entitled The Ways of Water will explore the environmental, ecological and cultural importance of local waterways, wetlands and water resources. Simple ways to help protect and conserve water resources will be discussed. This outing complements the Journey Program. Registration for this program is through the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York at www.gsneny.org or call 518-489-8110. A materials fee applies. Participants should dress for the weather and wear clothes that can get messy. WILD APPLES A field study of the natural and cultural history of wild apple trees will be conducted on Saturday, October 16 at 10:00 AM. As many as 50 species of birds and mammals go bananas over apples. In celebration of Apple Month, Center staff will conduct a naturalists' tour of remnant apple trees along the Old Field Trail, site of the former Ackerman fruit farm. On this outdoor foray over gentle terrain, participants will monitor the soft mast crop, check for signs of wildlife use, and also perhaps get a taste of the old days. REPTILE PROGRAM An indoor program on the ecology of snakes and turtles will be conducted on Saturday, October 16 at 2:00 PM. In celebration of Reptile Awareness Day, local herpetologist Dee Strnisa will provide show-and-tell introductions to common reptiles, with many live specimens for close-up inspection. The natural history, ecological importance and conservation status of various reptile species will be discussed. This program is open to the public free of charge. Passport to Awareness will feature round-robin activity stations such as service animals, American Sign Language, and adaptive recreational equipment, which are designed to foster a culture of understanding, recognition and appreciation of persons of all abilities. Participants will increase knowledge of disability issues, help recognize and change stigmatizing attitudes and enhance their skills in making friends with their peers with disabilities. The program is produced by the NYS Interagency Disability Awareness Committee, a team of professionals from NYS Department of Health, NYS Vocational and Educational Services, Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley, Capital District Center for Independence, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Quad Design, and the NYS Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.
