This outdoor study will visit the broad fields of the Center's Old Field Trail, home to bluebirds, rabbit, fox, and deer. Areas managed as forever field will be compared to areas left wild to transition into brushland. The conservation values of both habitats will be considered. This program is open to the public free of charge, but space is limited. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. WOODSY OWL BIRTHDAY PROGRAM -- Saturday, September 3 at 2:00 PM A family-oriented exploration of forest ecology will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, September 3 at 2:00 PM. During this outdoor study, Center naturalists will lead a search for seasonal signs of squirrels, deer, woodpeckers and, of course, owls. The program, which commemorates the 41st anniversary of Woodsy Owl's "Give A Hoot" campaign, will demonstrate ways in which participants can "Lend A Hand, Care For The Land" right at home. On these outdoor surveys of the fall migration, Center naturalists will help identify bird feeder visitors beginning at 7:00 AM over coffee and bagels indoors, then lead participants outdoors along Center trails at 7:30 AM to look for fall specialties, as well as year-round avian residents. The long term data collected on these citizen science outings help to monitor avian trends such as response to changing land use, climate change and other environmental influences. The programs are open to the public free of charge. Participants are urged to dress for outdoor activity. Programs may be cancelled in the event of severe weather. PREDATORS OF THE NIGHT -- Friday, September 9 at 7:00 PM A program on nocturnal predators will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Friday, September 9 at 7:00 PM. During this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will introduce participants to predator-prey relationships and discuss how camouflage, speed, reproduction rates and other adaptations contribute to the survival of wildlife species. Center staff will lead an outdoor foray along gentle trails, looking for night shift species such as the great horned owl, eastern coyote and fisher. At this hands-on workshop, Center staff will lead a participatory training in Project WILD, an initiative which integrates wildlife themes into the core reading, writing and arithmetic disciplines. Participants will receive a free Project WILD curriculum guide full of stimulating activities, correlated to the NYS learning standards, for students in grades K-12. Thereafter, Center staff will lead a first-hand tour of the many elements of Five Rivers former CCC Camp S-72 which are still intact. The program commemorates the closing exactly 75 years ago of the grouse camp, which was established at the Five Rivers site in 1933 to create the Delmar Experimental Game Farm.
