During this hands-on workshop, Center staff will lead a participatory training in Project WILD Aquatic, an initiative which integrates aquatic wildlife themes into the core reading, writing and arithmetic disciplines. Participants will receive a free Project WILD Aquatic curriculum guide full of stimulating activities for students in grades K-12. The workshop is open to teachers and youth leaders free of charge. Please call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, March 2 to register for the workshop. DR. SEUSS READ-A-THON A Dr. Seuss read-a-thon will be conducted on Saturday, March 5 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. At this indoor program, Center staff and docents will commemorate the late Dr. Seuss birthday with continuous readings of classic Dr. Seuss nature titles. The program, open to the public free of charge, is in celebration of the National Education Associations 14th annual Read Across America Day initiative. The program will also feature a visit from The Cat In The Hat and special prizes for anyone dressed up in character garb. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. According to the Family Literacy Foundation, reading aloud with children has been shown to be the single best predictor of a childs future academic success. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that parents read to their children every day, starting when the children are just six months old. The National Education Association estimates that 40 million children and adults coast to coast celebrate the joys of reading during the annual Read Across America Day celebration, which is held each year on or about March 2, Dr. Seuss' birthday. These hands-on programs will demonstrate the entire sugaring process, from sap to syrup, at a series of education stations. Participants can twirl a drill and pound a spile, inspect the sap flow in the sugarbush, savor the sugary aroma of sap boiling down into syrup at the evaporator, and take a maple taste test. A local maple producer will be on site to answer questions as well as to offer a variety of maple products for sale. These programs are open to the public free of charge.
