On these outdoor studies, participants will help Center naturalists track firefly populations at Five Rivers, assessing the number of individuals and number of species seen flashing. Fireflies are easy to spot and studying their behavior is fun and educational. Most importantly, firefly watching advances the scientific understanding of this fascinating beetle, many species of which are in decline due to the use of pesticides and light pollution. Five Rivers firefly watch initiative, now in its fourth year, is part of a nationwide citizen science program sponsored by Tufts University and the Boston Museum of Science to monitor firefly populations. These programs are open to the public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, programs will be cancelled. Please call 518-475-0291 for more information. WILDLIFE PROGRAM AT FIVE RIVERS Saturday, July 30 at 10:00 AM A behind-the-scenes tour of the live animal exhibits at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center will be conducted at the Center on Saturday, July 30 at 10:00 AM. During this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will discuss the natural history of the turtles, snakes, fish and owl on display at the Center, and what it takes to care for them while in captivity. Following the tour, Center naturalists will lead an outdoor foray to look for wildlife species in their natural habitat. This program is open to the public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, the outdoor portion of the program may be cancelled. Please call 518-475-0291 for more information. FAMILY PROGRAM ON WILDLIFE CAMOUFLAGE Saturday, July 30 at 2:00 PM A family-oriented program on wildlife camouflage will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, July 30 at 2:00 PM. Good camouflage is hard to find, and many wildlife species benefit by blending in perfectly with their surroundings. At this indoor/outdoor exploration, Center naturalists will present an overview of creatures which use camouflage as a defense mechanism. Afterwards, participants will search field and fen for animals that can hide in plain sight. This program is free of charge, but space is limited. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. Please call the Center at 518-475-0291 to register by Wednesday, July 27. In the event of inclement weather, this program may be cancelled. The program, in commemoration of the late Roger Tory Peterson's birthday (1908), will focus on Peterson's revolutionary field mark identification system, which launched our modern preoccupation with birds and bird conservation. Special attention will be paid to birds of conservation concern, such as kestrels, bluebirds and field sparrows, which Dr. Peterson referred to as environmental litmus paper. This program is open to the public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, this program may be cancelled. Please call 518-475-0291 for more information. MONARCH SEARCH AT FIVE RIVERS--Saturday, August 27 at 2:00 PM A field study of the Monarch butterfly will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, August 27 at 2:00 PM. In one of nature's most extraordinary migrations, Monarch butterflies begin to flit their way in late summer from the northeastern US and Canada to a small forest in Mexico. During this outdoor study, Center naturalists will lead participants along gentle Center trails, searching for Monarch larvae among milkweed stands and watching for adults in flight. Participants will learn about the Center's long-term Monarch Larvae Monitoring Program and also get tips on raising butterflies from caterpillars. This program is open to the public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, this program may be cancelled. Please call 518-475-0291 for more information EVENING BIRD PROGRAM AT FIVE RIVERS--Tuesday, August 30 at 7:00 PM A search for the common nighthawk, a species of special concern in New York, will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday, August 30 at 7:00 PM. The common nighthawk, a bird which is neither a hawk, nor very common, typically wends its way south during evenings in late August. Once numerous throughout New York State in both urban and rural settings, the nighthawk is now in decline and faces a variety of conservation challenges. During this outdoor foray, Center naturalists will lead a search along gentle Center trails, scanning the evening skies for a glimpse of this and other birds of late summer. This program is open to the public free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, this program may be cancelled. Please call 518-475-0291 for more information.
