HONEY BEE PROGRAM -- Saturday, May 28 at 10:00 AM Learn about the ecological and economic importance of the honey bee during this indoor/outdoor program. Center naturalists will provide an overview of the natural history of honey bees, then lead a tour of the Center's outdoor bee hive and orchard. Participants will then return to the Visitor Center for a beeswax craft. The impact of colony collapse disorder will be discussed. INVASIVE SPECIES PROGRAM -- June 4 at 2:00 PM An indoor/outdoor study of invasive species will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, June 4 at 2:00 PM. At this program, Center naturalists will present an indoor introduction to some of our most serious invasive species threats. Thereafter, staff will lead an outdoor survey to discover some of the invasive species at Five Rivers and to learn about some of the things the Center is doing to combat them. Serious forest threats such as the Asian longhorned beetle and the emerald ash borer will be discussed. Today's global economy enables plants and animals to travel around the world. Invasive species are non-native organisms which thrive in new-found environments, displacing native species. Invasive species are the second biggest reason for species becoming endangered in our area. This program is open to the public free of charge. TEACHER WORKSHOP -- Project WILD Aquatic A teacher workshop on the award-winning curriculum-enhancement program Project WILD Aquatic will be conducted on Saturday, June 11 at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. At this hands-on workshop, Center staff will lead a participatory training in Project WILD Aquatic, an initiative which integrates aquatic wildlife themes into the core reading, writing and arithmetic disciplines. Participants will receive a free Project WILD Aquatic curriculum guide full of stimulating activities for students in grades K-12. The workshop is open to teachers and youth leaders free of charge. SEARCH FOR WATERFOWL AT FIVE RIVERS A program on the natural history of ducks and geese will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, June 11 at 2:00 PM. At this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will provide an intro-duck-tory briefing on common waterfowl, then lead participants along gentle Center trails to take a gander at geese and ducks foraging in the ponds and grasses. In addition to raising upland game birds, from 1933 to 1970 the Delmar facility also dabbled in waterfowl propagation. In fact, the mallard was quite unheard of in the eastern flyway until Five Rivers waterfowl program got underway. The program, which is in celebration of the birthday of Americas most popular drake, Donald Duck (1934), is open to the public free of charge. At this indoor program, Center naturalists will provide an overview of the natural history of fireflies and their conservation challenges, as well as training in spotting, identifying and accurately counting fireflies. Volunteers will be expected to participate in one or more Firefly Watch programs scheduled at Five Rivers this summer. Fireflies are sensitive to light pollution, pesticides, and changing land use, and many species are in decline. Firefly Watch is a nation-wide citizen science initiative sponsored by Tufts University and the Boston Museum of Science to help scientists track populations of this fascinating insect. At this indoor program, NYSDEC Forest Ranger Karen Glesmann will discuss basic equipment, tips on map reading, how not to get lost--and what to do if you do--and other expert advice about safety on the trail. WILDFLOWER STUDY AT FIVE RIVERS - Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00 PM An outdoor study of the wildflowers of the solstice will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00 PM. Many of the plants which immigrants introduced to the New World were brought not for their culinary or aesthetic uses, but because of their reputed medicinal or supernatural powers. During this field foray along gentle trails, Center naturalists will discuss the natural and cultural history of speedwell, heal-all, dandelion and other seasonal flora. The impact of alien and invasive species on native flora will be discussed. Field identification tips and the use of field guides and hand lenses to identify common and not-so-common wildflowers will also be covered. This program is open to the public free of charge.
