GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM ON INVASIVE SPECIES -- Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. A program for Girl Scouts on invasive species will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. At this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will present an introduction to some of our most serious invasive species threats. Serious forest threats such as the Asian longhorned beetle and the emerald ash borer will be discussed. Scouts will be actively involved in locating, identifying and severing invasive Oriental bittersweet vines and phragmites reed. Today's global economy enables plants and animals to travel around the world. Invasive species are non-native organisms which thrive in new-found environments, displacing native species. Invasive species are the second biggest reason for species becoming endangered in our area. This program is open to Girl Scouts and scout leaders in the North Eastern New York Council free of charge. Scouts and scout leaders must accompany each other. Hiking boots and garden gloves are helpful but not necessary. In the event of inclement weather, the outdoor portion of the presentation may be cancelled. Please call 518-475-0291 for more information.
