THE NATURE OF HALLOWEEN -- Saturday, October 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A show-and-tell Halloween Open House will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, October 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. At this family-friendly indoor exposition, Center naturalists will share fun natural history facts and dispel common misconceptions about snakes, bats, spiders and other creatures of Halloween myth. What was the first evergreen species used for Christmas trees? What are the differences among all the species now available? This wide-ranging, socio-economic overview will cover everything from how trees are grown to how Christmas traditions differ in other parts of the world. FAMILY PROGRAM TO CELEBRATE AMERICA RECYCLES DAY -- Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. A family-oriented program in celebration of national America Recycles Day will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. At this show-and-do exploration, Center staff will introduce the three R's of Reduce, Re-use and Recycle through a series of games and activities. Participants will learn how observing simple Reduce, Re-use and Recycle ideals can help to preserve natural resources, protect the environment and benefit the economy. Savvy tips on how to Reduce, Re-use and Recycle at home will be discussed, such as which materials can and can't be recycled, and which safe bet products typically have recycled/recyclable content (such as egg cartons). America Recycles Day, held every year on November 15, is a national campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling and buying products made with recycled materials.
