Squirrels get very busy at this time of year as they prepare for winter, and are easy to see and fun to watch. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN PROGRAM AT FIVE RIVERS A program on the ecology of reptiles and amphibians will be conducted at the NYSDEC Five Rivers Environmental Education, 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar, on Saturday, October 1 at 2 p.m. In celebration of Reptile Awareness Day, Center naturalists will provide a brief indoor overview of the many herpetological species that live in this area, and then lead an outdoor search of Five Rivers ponds to look for basking turtles, frogs and snakes. The ecological importance and conservation status of various reptile and amphibian species will be discussed. This program is open to the public free of charge. PROGRAM ON NUT TREES AT FIVE RIVERS A field study of nut-bearing trees will be conducted at the NYSDEC Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar, on Saturday, October 8 at 10 a.m. Nut trees are important food sources both for wildlife and people, and at this time of year the woods come alive with nut gathering activity. On this outdoor exploration, Center naturalists will lead a search over gentle terrain for hickory nuts, acorns, walnuts and other hard mast. The ecological and economic importance of native nut trees will be discussed. The program is in celebration of the U.N.s International Year of Forests and is open to the public free of charge. FALL FOLIAGE PROGRAM AT FIVE RIVERS A naturalists study of natures autumnal palette will be conducted at the NYSDEC Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, 56 Game Farm Road, Delmar, on Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m. As broad leaf trees shut down for the winter, the woodlands become a riot of colors. During this forest foray, Center naturalists will lead a tour of falls vibrant foliage along gentle Center trails. Participants will learn how to identify tree species by fall coloration. The science behind autumns bewitching biochemistry and the impact of climate change on local tree species will also be discussed. This program is open to the public free of charge. PROGRAM ON INVASIVE FOREST PESTS -- Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. A program on the emerald ash borer, an alien invasive insect which is destroying ash trees all over the northeast, will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. During this indoor/outdoor study, Center naturalists will present a brief overview of the environmental and socio-economic impacts of the emerald ash borer and another invasive forest pest, the Asian longhorned beetle. Staff will also give a short show-and-tell presentation about the purple box traps which NYSDEC has hung from trees throughout New York's countryside to monitor the emerald ash borer. Afterwards, Center staff will lead a forest survey along gentle trails to monitor forest health at Five Rivers. This program is open to the public free of charge. Often towering more than 350 feet high, redwoods are one of the Earth's largest and oldest tree species. This film, part of the recent International Forest Film Festival, will highlight the little-explored environment of the redwoods using high-tech aerial laser surveys and breathtaking imagery. The screening, which continues the Centers celebration of the United Nations International Year of Forests, is open to the public free of charge, but space is limited. MAKE A SOLAR COOKER -- Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. A family-oriented program on making solar reflector cookers will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. Solar reflector cookers can be used to cook stews or soups and bake cakes and breads. They concentrate the sun's energy to heat the food directly, unlike traditional energy sources. At this indoor workshop, Center naturalists will provide a brief overview of the physics of passive solar power and demonstrate several passive solar devices. Afterwards, participants will construct their own solar cookers from everyday materials and, weather permitting, try them out under the star. Parents and children must accompany each other. MAP AND COMPASS CLINIC -- Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. A hands-on workshop on how to use a map and compass will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. Knowing how to use a map and compass is essential for finding your way safely in the woods. At this indoor/outdoor clinic, NYSDEC Forest Ranger Karen Glesmann will demonstrate how to read and understand a map and use a compass for descriptions, direction, distance, scale and detail. Participants will then practice way-finding skills outdoors along gentle Center trails. This program is open to the public free of charge, but space is limited.
