An indoor/outdoor plenary session from 10:00 a.m. to noon will focus on savvy tips and methods for teaching outdoors in winter, as well as helpful curriculum enhancement resources that will help you make winter studies fun and engaging. After a brown-bag lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m., concurrent outdoor elective sessions on Winter Ecology of the Forest and Winter Ecology of the Fields will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., followed by concurrent outdoor elective sessions on Snow as a Teaching Tool and Maple Syrup as a Teaching Tool beginning at 2:00 p.m. The presentations are free, but space is limited. SEUSS READ-A-THON -- Saturday, March 3 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. A Dr. Seuss read-a-thon will be conducted on Saturday, March 3 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. At this indoor program, Center staff and other knowledgeable guides will commemorate the late Dr. Seuss' birthday with continuous readings of classic Dr. Seuss nature titles. The program, open to the public free of charge, is in celebration of the National Education Association's 15th annual Read Across America Day initiative. The program will also feature a visit from The Cat In The Hat and special prizes for anyone dressed up in character garb. Parents and children must accompany each other. According to the Family Literacy Foundation, reading aloud with children has been shown to be the single best predictor of a childs future academic success. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that parents read to their children every day, starting when the children are just six months old. The National Education Association estimates that 40 million children and adults coast to coast celebrate the joys of reading during the annual Read Across America Day celebration, held each year on or about March 2, Dr. Seuss birthday. FULL MOON OUTING -- Friday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. An outdoor exploration of a winters night under the light of the full moon will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Friday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. At this family-friendly study, Center naturalists will conduct an indoor show-and-tell briefing on the unique ways various creatures are adapted to life in the dark. Afterwards, Center staff will lead a walk along gentle trails, looking and listening for common creatures of the night such as the great horned owl, eastern coyote and opossum. PROJECT WILD TEACHER WORKSHOP -- Saturday, March 10 from 9:00 a.m. to noon A teacher workshop on the award-winning curriculum-enhancement program Project WILD will be conducted at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, March 10 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. At this hands-on workshop, Center staff will lead a participatory training in Project WILD (Wildlife in Learning Design), an initiative which integrates wildlife themes into the core reading, writing and arithmetic disciplines. Participants will receive a free Project WILD curriculum guide full of stimulating activities, correlated to the NYS learning standards, for students in grades K-12. FAMILY PROGRAM: BUILD A BIRDHOUSE -- Saturday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. A parent-and-child craft workshop on birdhouse making will be conducted on Saturday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. Mid-March is a great time to set out a bird house, and this program, geared for parents and their children, is all you need to get started. At this indoor workshop, Center staff will provide a brief overview of cavity-nesting birds and then help participants measure, mark and hammer together their own bird house suitable for bluebirds, tree swallows or house wrens. Parents and children must accompany each other. All bird house kit materials will be provided. Participants are urged to bring a hammer. Space is limited. These hands-on programs will demonstrate the entire sugaring process, from sap to syrup, at a series of education stations. Participants can twirl a drill and pound a spile, inspect the sap flow in the sugarbush, savor the sugary aroma of sap boiling down into syrup at the evaporator, and take a maple taste test. A local maple producer will be on site to answer questions as well as to offer a variety of maple products for sale. These programs are open to the public free of charge. AFRICAN VIOLET WORKSHOP -- Saturday, March 17 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. The Capital District African Violet Society will conduct a workshop on how to care for African violets at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Saturday, March 17 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. This program will focus on potting, lighting, fertilizing, temperature, plant grooming, pests, and propagation. A sample of the over 20,000 named varieties of African violets and related genera will be on display. The program is open to the public free of charge. Participants are encouraged to bring their African violets for specific recommendations on how to turn a household plant into a show quality plant.
