We hope to use this list to periodically provide you with the latest information about big game biology, management, and hunting in New York. To save email space and avoid sending large messages, many of our postings will include links to new material on the NYSDEC website. As a means of introduction, I'd invite you to read our latest Big Game Program Briefs (http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/wildlife/deer/bgbriefs.htm). Click on "January-June" to read about 2005 deer harvests and 2006 prospects, Deer Management Assistance Program, and other notes of interest from each of our Regional Deer Biologists from January through July, 2006. This newsletter highlights recent regulation changes including the expansion of areas open to bear hunting in the Southern Zone and expansion of the Pilot Antler Restriction Program. Look for a thorough unit by unit forecast of the 2006 deer hunting season to be available later this week. Thank you for your interest in NY Big Game. Licenses can be purchased at any license issuing outlet throughout the state (town clerks and sporting goods stores). Applications can be downloaded from the NYSDEC website and sent in by mail. If you purhased a sporting license through DEC's Automated Licensing System (DECALS) from 2002 to 2005, you also have the option of applying by phone (1-866-933-2257) or online (http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/license/decalsproc.html). To apply online or by phone, you will need your customer ID number from your previous license. You may apply for Deer Management Permits (DMPs) when you purchase your license, but all DMP applications must be filed by October 1, 2006. To view the selection chances for obtaining first or second DMPs in the Wildlife Management Unit within which you hunt, please view our website at: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/license/dmpchances.html (scroll to the bottom of the page to see the table). Remember DMPs are only valid for use in the WMU specified on the permit. Thank you for your interest in NY Big Game. This is an exciting time of year and a great time to be in the woods. Archery Season for deer and bear in the Northern Zone opens tomorrow, September 27 and runs until October 20, 2006. Remember that last year's hunting license (2005-2006)and bowhunting privilege is required when archery hunting for deer or bear prior to October 1. For archery hunters pursuing deer, from Sept. 27-30 you may use last year's unfilled regular season deer tag (valid for either sex deer during this period), Bow/Muz either sex tag, or Bow/Muz antlerless tag. Deer Management Permits are not valid for use during any portion of the Northern Zone Archery Season including the last four days of September. Successful hunters are reminded to report their harvest. Hunters who harvest a bear in the Northern Zone are also asked to submit a portion of the lower jaw or a tooth of the bear for us to determine the age of the bear. A collection packet with postage-paid return envelope and tooth extraction instructions will be mailed to each hunter that reports a bear harvest. Hunters who report a bear and submit a tooth sample will receive a 2006 NYSDEC Bear Management Cooperator Patch. The Southern Zone Regular Deer Season opens on Saturday, November 18. Many hunters have looked forward to this day for the last 10 months, and early reports from hunters in the Northern Zone are very favorable. Despite some poor weather, Muzzleloader take appears to be up from last year, and after a slow opening weekend Regular Season in the Northern Zone has really picked up. In the Southern Zone, Archery Season appears to have been a bit slow compared to previous years, probably due to several poor weather weekends. However, archers are reporting seeing a lot of deer activity and a lot of buck sign. To read unit by unit forecasts for this hunting season see http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/wildlife/deer/deerfore.htm To read the DEC Commissioner Sheehan's announcement of the 2006-2007 Southern Zone opener see http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/press/pressrel/2006/2006182.html Last year was New York's safest hunting season in history. Yet, New York State still experienced 29 injuries statewide. Fifteen of these injuries occurred during deer season, and unfortunately, three of the incidents in the popular Southern Zone hunting season were fatal. Most hunting related shooting incidents involve members of the same hunting party, and virtually all are easily preventable. Every hunter has the power to prevent such injuries with safe gun handling and careful shooting. Each hunter can also help other hunters avoid mistakes by following five simple safety rules: Assume Control from Trigger to Target, and Beyond 1. Assume every gun is loaded. (Unload guns when not in use, but never take chances with any firearm); 2. Control the muzzle * keep it pointed in a safe direction; 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot; 4. Be sure of your target and beyond; and 5. Wear hunter orange. To read more about hunter safety guidelines, see DEC Commissioner Sheehan's message to hunters for this coming Southern Zone Regular Deer Season at http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/press/pressrel/2006/2006187.html Good luck this season and don't forget to Report Your Deer! In the Southern Zone, the Muzzleloading and late Archery Seasons for deer and bear will begin at sunrise on Monday, December 11 and continue through sunset on Tuesday, December 19. If you have yet to buy your bowhunting or muzzleloading hunting privilege, these licenses will continue to be on sale until the end of the hunting season. Every year as we approach this season change, we get numerous phone calls from hunters about which tags they can use during the Southern Zone Muzzleloading and late Archery Seasons. To help clarify the matter, I have bulleted some key points below. - Even though the special seasons tags are titled (Bow/Mz), you may hunt with a muzzleloader during the muzzleloading season only if you have purchased muzzleloading privileges. Similarly, you may hunt with a bow only if you have proper bowhunting certification and have purchased bowhunting privileges. - If you have purchased both bowhunting and muzzleloading privileges, you may use either implement to fill both tags. - If you have not filled your Regular Season tag, this tag may be used during the late season for antlered or antlerless deer (with appropriate bowhunting or muzzleloading privileges). - Deer Management Permits (DMPs) may be used in the late Archery and Muzzleloading Seasons in the appropriate Wildlife Management Unit specified on the DMP. Please report your harvest and encourage your fellow sportsmen and women to do the same. Enjoy the remainder of this year's big game hunting. Jeremy Hurst Big Game Biologist NYSDEC
