See http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/52340.html to read the press release announcing the harvest, and http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42232.html for the harvest tables. With the harvest numbers announced only yesterday, we have already been asked by several writers and hunters about what to expect for Deer Management Permit allocations next fall. At this point it is too early to make any predictions. Winter conditions this year have been pretty rough through much of the state, and if we get some late winter storms or deep snows and cold temperatures persisting through March, then deer populations in some parts of the state could take a hit. We will be monitoring winter's impact and analyzing deer population trends unit by unit over the coming months. The press release announcing the 2008 bear harvest should be available in a day or two, and I will forward that link when it is ready. We have just created the Hunting and Trapping Photo Gallery (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/54055.html) specifically for junior hunters (ages 12-15), young trappers (under age 16), and hunters who have harvested their first big or small game animal. The Turkey Hunting Photo Gallery is currently up and running and awaiting more photo submissions. In the near future, we'll have separate galleries for deer hunting, bear hunting, small game hunting, and trapping. Feel free to submit photos from the 2008 hunting seasons to help us build these other galleries over the coming months. The main photo gallery page (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/54055.html) provides instructions and an email link and mail address for submitting photographs. The new fees will be in effect for all 2009-2010 licenses which will go on sale August 17, 2009 and for all Lifetime Licenses beginning October 1, 2009. We have been getting a fair number of questions from sportsmen on the issue, so I'd like to direct you to some new information we have posted on our website that describes the changes. Here are a few highlights, followed by links to key webpages. - All Lifetime Licenses and 2008-09 sporting licenses will remain available for the previous fees and with the previous age requirements through September 30, 2009. Remember, 2008-09 licenses are only valid until Sept. 30, 2009. - The minimum age for Senior license types has been raised from 65 to 70. - Hunters currently 65 years or older may purchase a Senior Lifetime Sportsman License through September 30, 2009 for $50. - A new Trapper Super Sportsman license provides all the privileges of the resident Fishing, Small and Big Game,Trapping license, Muzzleloading privilege, and Turkey Permit. - Deer Management Permit Applications will now be free only to Junior Hunting and Junior Bowhunting licenses holders and to holders of Lifetime Sportsman Licenses purchased prior to October 1, 2009. - For those of you that like to fish, a new Recreational Marine fishing license will be required to fish in the Marine or Coastal District or in any other waters when pursuing "migratory fish from the sea." I want to also remind you all that we still have two public meetings on deer management scheduled in Region 9 next week. Additionally, we are planning for another meeting in Region 3 (probably near Kingston) and a meeting in New York City, both of which will likely be in early-mid November. We'll post the details on our website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/57795.html as soon as they are finalized. You may download the input sheet and mail it to us or send us a note via the email link on the webpage. In my last listserve post, I shared that early harvest reports through DECALS indicated the Regular deer season got off to a stronger start than last year. This was more likely a result of the difficulty hunting conditions and the exceptionally slow start we had for the 2008 regular season than some surprising abundance of deer this year. In fact, as the season progressed the reported deer take came closer in line with the 2008 reported take just as we expected. Our deer reports for the Southern Zone stand at about 99% of the reported take through the same period last year. Deer hunting continues in Westchester County until December 31 and in Suffolk County until the end of January. We will be entering biological data from our field checks over the next few weeks and are anticipating running a preliminary deer harvest calculation in early January. We have heard varied reports from hunters about their successes and observation rates of deer across the state, so I am looking forward to seeing how our harvest reports breakdown regionally. Final deer take numbers won't be available until sometime in February, after the close of the Special Firearms Season on Long Island. Likewise, we will be compiling our final bear take numbers over the next month. In addition to our staff out checking bears, taxidermists and meat processors play a big role in helping us get biological data on harvested bears. We will be updating our bear harvest database as those reports come in. Preliminary reports through DECALS indicate that the statewide bear take in 2009 will be pretty similar to last year. Our Big Game Photo Gallery has received a handful of pictures of successful young hunters and a few of older hunters who have taken their first deer this year, but we've got room for more. See www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/54055.html for instructions on how to submit photos and a link to the Big Game Photo Gallery. Also, for those of you that need to plan your time off from work well in advance, we have posted the expected 2010-2011 big game season dates at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/10002.html Merry Christmas to all!
