The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) invites the public to celebrate Earth Day at Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center on Sunday, April 26, 2009 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This free event will feature environmental and nature-related activities for children and their families. Visit the touch-table featuring wildlife pelts and bones. A DEC Environmental Conservation Officer will be on hand to answer questions. Student Conservation Association AmeriCorps members will conduct an array of activities for all ages: a family scavenger hunt, live eel exhibit, solar cooking demonstration, Hudson River puzzle and beachcombing table, watershed model demonstration, and birding activity. A local beekeeper will show live honeybees and the interior of a hive to explain how beekeepers work to preserve these important pollinators. At the farmstead, the Hudson Valley Draft Horse Association and Stony Kill Foundation will present ongoing demonstrations of draft-horse and mule-powered plowing and tilling, and log pulling. Enjoy all of these activities as well as horse-drawn wagon rides, all without the use of fossil fuels. These farming activities are a part of Stony Kill?s support of sustainable agriculture. Elijah?s Meat Market will sell food at the farmstead, while vegetarian food will be available at the Manor House. To reduce waste, DEC encourages visitors to ?BYOBAB: bring your own bottle and bag.?
