To address this need, the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) is currently developing a staffing guide and is seeking the input of chief operators and administrators in order to make such a resource as accurate and useful as possible. At this point NEIWPCC has completed the first round of estimations for the Staffing of Wastewater Treatment Plants. The next step will be to share these estimates with Wastewater Plant Chief Operators/Superintendents to see how the draft charts stack up to actually operating facilities. This is where YOU can help. Your input will provide the opportunity to identify what the actual vs. optimal and minimum levels of staffing are for each different treatment process and flow amount. As there are many processes, operations and options to choose from these charts, NEIWPCC is seeking a wide range of plants to pilot test them with. This includes facilities with varying flows, processes and permitting requirements to try and hit the whole spectrum represented on these charts. If you would like to contribute, please contact me axcherub at gw.dec.state.ny.us or phone me at 518-402-8155. I will then provide your name, facility, and process type and flow information to NEIWPCC for follow-up, including your receipt of the draft charts. As all New England states are also involved in this effort, there is the potential for redundant plant types (by flow and processes) to be given consideration for inclusion. Thus, to minimize this redundancy I cannot guarantee that your response to my message will result in your participation with NEIWPCC. However, I expect many New York facilities would be asked for follow-up given the number and diversity of our treatment facilities. I appreciate your consideration in taking part in this effort and look forward to hearing back from you. If you would like to contact me to discuss this in detail, please do so at your convenience. Timing is relatively short on this, so if you have an interest in taking part, please contact me no later than October 19. Thank you. NYSDEC administers the wastewater operator exam while the collection exam is administered by the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA). As the current Vice-President for ABC, I'd like to inform you that several resources are available for download at ABC's website which may be helpful as you prepare for these exams. These resources are: ABC Need-to-Know Criteria These describe the core competencies that are covered on the ABC standardized exams. While many states utilize the ABC Need-to-Know Criteria for the development of their exams, some utilize their own Need-to-Know Criteria. As a point of clarification, NYSDEC utilizes a prescriptive exam, which means that we select the questions for our exams from ABC's item bank of questions, instead of using ABC's standardized exam. NYWEA uses ABC's standardized collection exams for its collection certification program. Information on this program is available at www.nywea.org The ABC Need-to-Know Criteria are available for wastewater, collections, and other professions online in PDF format by selecting the link at: www.abccert.org/needtoknow.html Exam References and Study Material ABC's exam questions are primarily referenced to publications from California State University, Sacramento; the Water Environment Federation (WEF); and the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Reference sheets for a number of certification categories are provided in PDF format.
